Fred
Lamal
Fred resided on the Finger
Road, Town of Humboldt. He was the fourth oldest child in a
family of seven. Fred and his two older brothers, John and Charles,
owned about the first car ever sold in Green Bay. When he was a teenager,
he went to North Dakota to cut wheat. He used six horses to pull
binder.
He married Anna Watermolen on September 4, 1917.
They were married by Father Peters at Holy Martyrs of Gorcum Church.
They moved to Elm Street in Green Bay and Fred worked at Rothes Foundry.
They lived there about six months. He bought a motorcycle.
Fred and Anna moved back to the farm on Finger Road and became partners
with Charles. When World War I broke out, Fred did not have to go
because of the farm. Ray was born July 31, 1918, the first of three
boys and six girls. In 1919 several people in the neighborhood died from
the flu. In 1921 Fred and Anna rented a farm from Mrs Charles DeGreef,
who had lost her husband in the flu epedemic. They stayed one year.
They bought a farm in the Town of Preble from Anton Tilkens, it was 55
acres just south of Holy Martyrs Church. Fred operated a blacksmith
shop located on his farm. He sharpened and welded plow points for
neighbors. He operated a hay bailer with his brother Charles, bailing hay
for other farmers. He was also a carpenter, building and framing
barns with Peter Van Den Boom. During this time he continued to farm.
In 1952, he sold the farm and moved to 1717 Crooks Street, Green Bay, WI,
where he built a new house. He then worked for Ed Nickolwitz, a union
carpenter, building homes. They built a cottage on Lee Lake the same
year. In 1964 they sold the cottage. In 1965, Anna died, Fred
died in 1967.
