Rosella Elizabeth Vanden Langenberg

The following was written by Rosella Elizabeth Vanden Langenberg Lamal in 1994.

I started school in 1925 or 1926 at the age of six at Hillcrest School, a one room school house located on Finger Road (now called East Mason) which went up to eight grade.  We lived two miles from school and usually walked both ways.  During severe winter weather we would get rides from either my father or a neighbor.  My father would take us with the horse and sleigh.  I enjoyed school very much but times were hard.  I had only two teachers during the eight years, Vernal Hart and Ruth Duquaine.  Our school days were not exciting because it was the beginning of the great depression.  We did manage to have a Christmas program and a summer picnic.  Our summer picnic was at Raymakers pond and it included a weiner roast, a milk can full of lemonade and games.  I received my diploma at the Bay Theater in 1933 with only eight graduates in my class.  Eloise, Rosella and Harvey did not attend high school.

The great depression was going on and I was fourteen when I went to work doing various jobs, taking care of kids for Honey Boerschinger and working for Larsen Canning Company.
